From Curiosities to Wabi Sabi, The Mission Gives Our French Side a Little Extra Flavor

San Francisco’s Mission District is known for its deep Spanish-Mexican roots, and although our afternoon had to begin with an authentic, totally decadent veggie burrito at Cancun, it continued along Valencia Street with lots of quirky, eclectic outposts being manned by the neighborhood’s most innovative young shop-keepers.

Susan Hengst has a real knack with the understated avant garde, and this minimal but elegantly personal space is the perfect place to try out her high-waisted silk pajama pants and long dramatic ruched dresses.

Nostalgic Apothecary Products & French Wax That Won’t Hurt!

Le Pink & Company

Le Pink & Company

I tripped on Le Pink & Co. on my way to Cafe Stella and couldn’t resist stopping in to explore the selection. For such a small space, it is spilling over with hard to find beauty products from all around the world. I discovered that there are also on sight aestheticians who specialize in using a high end French hard wax that is perfect for sensitive areas. Translation: a bikini wax that’s more effective and less painful! Yesss.

Laid Back LA

AWolf_StreetStyle

I love that Los Angeles street style is so laid back; in the beachy city, anything goes. But when I spotted this pretty girl on La Brea Ave, I realized that you can always exude that PARISIENNE style and femininity, even in a plaid workman’s shirt and a pair of Ray Bans. It’s all about confidence and attitude.

Dancing in Red Tights, Just Like Anna Karina

12-red-tights_smAnna Karina was filmmaker Jean Luc Godard’s muse, and it’s not hard to understand why. With alabaster skin, dark hair and mile-long eyelashes, the Danish-born actress is a serious stunner. In Godard’s 1961 French New Wave film A Woman is a Woman, Karina danced around in tomato red tights, so I picked up my very own pair from American Apparel in Los Angeles. Tres chic, non?

Found: Cool Chinoiserie Plates in Shades of Purple and a Pair of French Parlor Chairs

Lily-Simone-1

When you think Chinoiserie, the word cool does not pop into mind but these whimsical Chinoiserie porcelain plates are just that. They are a vintage reproduction in shades of purple with lavender accents and remind me of the raucous little sister of the classic blue and white china. So awesome and such a great find at Lily Simone in Eagle Rock, California. I also fell in love with these parlor chairs and wonder how they would look reupholstered in deep purple. DIY project anyone?

In honor of my favorite PARISIENNE man, Jean-Paul Belmondo, I hit the streets of Chigaco today in search of some spots where I might see some guys, hats and pipes. First stop was Iwan Reis, a true old world pipe and cigar shop with a super friendly staff and tons of men (I was the only woman in there!). Next stop was to the Pilsen neighborhood to a great vintage shop called Knee Deep with a great selection of News Boys and Fedoras.
