Highlights from The Journey | Mr. Telephone Man

Mr-Telephone-Man

I’m riding down Lincoln Road on my rental and I suddenly remember that now is the perfect time to pick up the Blackberry charger I forgot to pack. I’ve hijacked Anna’s charger on this trip and I’m sure she will soon notice that I’m holding it hostage. As I’m looking around, I barely notice that I’ve completely blocked the entire sidewalk and that there is man patiently waiting for me to move so he can walk by. But instead of getting angry, he asked me if I was lost and needed help. I smiled and remembered that I’m definitely not in New York right now.

Highlights from The Journey | Two Artists Open Their Studio For A Peek At What’s In Progress

bas-fisher-3

Despite the manic day we had yesterday, we were truly psyched to have a slip of time for a studio visit with local artists Naomi Fisher and Jim Drain. The two are at the helm of a burgeoning new artist-run collective called The Bas Fisher Invitational, which serves as gallery space for both local artists and other hand-picked talents the two are excited about. Nestled in Miami’s Design district, the pair’s exhibition/studio revealed not only a show in the midst of installation but a spacious work area that offered brilliant glimpses of each of the artist’s handiwork. Fisher focuses on photography, painting, and video all based on performing art produced in natural settings, and Drain is noted for his inventive work in textiles, scavenging much of his materials (the ones he doesn’t make himself) right from the streets. From massive collages of fabric and colored cushions to Fisher’s bewitching fluorescent portrait paintings, we were more than inspired.

Highlights from The Journey | Perfectly Messy Hair

AWolf_StreetStyle02

About a year ago I was on a travel shoot for Bon Appetit in Paris. Our shoot days were long, but every night I would meet up with a friend, and we would spend hours sitting outside of restaurants drinking, eating and people watching. The thing that struck me the most, was that so many of the girls we saw had such perfectly messy hair and super cute cuts. When I spotted this girl in West Hollywood, she took me right back to that PARISIENNE trip. This striking couple are makers of T-Shirt label Scottish Romance.

Argentian Cutie in Paris

I’ve never been to Paris before. My Parisian experience is limited to Truffaut films and stories my girlfriend tells me about the year she lived in Paris in a tiny apartment with her older sister. She was painter. They are both painters, and for a whole year, lived in a 9×9 room, sleeping in the same bed every night. Her sister is 15 years older than she is, yet most men thought they were identical twins.

Since studying in Paris and living with her sister, she, pictured above, has been slaving away for the man in New York City (an art auction house), while oing her best to paint as often as possible in her Brooklyn apartment. It’s hard. And she is often uninspired by the city, its dregs and derelicts. The corner of her room is tacked with photos and old postcards and stamps she collected while in Paris. They are her only inspiration. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her as happy as she is when recounting long afternoons in Paris with her sister, taking the city of lights in with every little breath. It even makes me feel good, so much so that I want to take her back, so she can relive the majesty.

Highlights from The Journey | Balmy Breezes & Potent Cocktails Make Our Rendez-Vous At The Raleigh A Miami Must

A big thanks to our friend Chad who insisted we swing by The Raleigh hotel for a quick cocktail. Despite our speedy 48-hour Miami tour, slipping through the lobby and into The Raleigh’s balmy lantern-lit garden was nothing short of magical. Flanked with comfy lounge chairs and generous love-seats, the majestic tree planted at the center of the garden served as a canopy of lights, while an adorable vintage-inspired cocktail cabana made us feel as though we had traveled much further than just Miami.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost

I am not from Paris; I often feel like I am from nowhere. I first flew out of my birth state when I was six months old. Since then I have moved nearly every three years, living abroad in both Europe and Asia and seven different states from the east coast, west coast, and as far flung as Hawaii.

Having no roots has made me feel as free as a bird. I wander from one corner of the earth to another; adapting myself to my surroundings and eagerly experiencing all each new home has to offer. When the time comes to move again, I go forward without backward glances and without regrets.

Will Paris adopt me? I hope so, for I will always be free, feminine, and ready to embrace life…
